The GSD insisted yesterday that it was acting responsibly by highlighting different scientific views on the potential benefits and risks of vaccinating children in the 12 to 15 age group.

The Opposition was reacting after being accused by the Gibraltar Government of pandering to the antivax lobby instead of protecting children, an accusation it described as “an outrageous lie typical of a government that only knows that style in defending itself”.

Earlier this week, the Gibraltar Government took the decision to offer vaccines children aged between 12 to 15 on the advice of the Medical Director at the Gibraltar Health Authority and the Director of Public Health.

That advice was issued after the four Chief Medical Officers in the UK gave the green light to vaccinate 12 to 15-year olds across the UK.

Robin Swann facing legal action over bid to give Covid-19 vaccine to Northern Ireland children

Northern Ireland’s Health Minister is facing a High Court battle over plans to vaccinate children between the ages of 12 and 15.

A pre-action letter has been sent to the Department of Health asking Robin Swann to reconsider his decision to extend Northern Ireland’s Covid vaccination programme to the age cohort.

The legal action raises concerns about the decision coming after the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) refused to approve the universal vaccination of healthy children.

The Freedom Gibraltar group has written to Dr Helen Carter, the recently appointed Director of Public Health, requesting answers to concerns members have surrounding the roll out of COVID-19 vaccines for children aged 12-15.

The group says that it is concerned that neither the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation nor the World Health Organisation have endorsed the use of this vaccine for children of this age group.

A spokesperson concluded: “Freedom Gibraltar demand answers with regards to the justification for the planned rollout and a response with regard to the provisions and responsibilities citizens can expect from the government, following its decision.”

The Health Authority is encouraging parents to be aware of the signs of respiratory illnesses in young children, which result in increasing demands on healthcare services over the winter period.

Respiratory illnesses, including colds and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) are very common in young children and we see them every year. For the majority of children, these illnesses are not serious and they recover quickly following rest and plenty of fluids. This year, a number of children have been admitted to hospital with RSV infection already.

Viruses are spread when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Tiny droplets of liquid can be breathed in directly from the air or picked up from a surface they have landed on, such as on toys or a table. RSV can survive on a surface for up to 24 hours.

Last winter, due to the various restrictions in place to reduce the spread of COVID-19, there were far fewer infections in younger people. This means many will not have developed immunity and it is possible that we will see more cases this year as a result.

Symptoms of RSV include:

Nasal congestion
Scratchy throat
A high temperature of 37.8°C or above (fever)
Noisy breathing (wheezing)
Inflammation and mucous collection in the smallest airways in the lungs (Bronchiolitis)

It can be difficult to tell the difference between COVID-19 and RSV symptoms. If you are concerned your child may have COVID-19 you should contact 111 or your GP for advice.

Most cases of RSV are not serious and clear up within 2 to 3 weeks. You should treat the symptoms by:
Keeping your child upright when needed, this can alleviate breathing
Encouraging the drinking of plenty of fluids
Continuing to offer small frequent oral feeds if tolerated
Treating your child’s fever with medication, according to the manufacturer’s instructions, if it is bothering them
Not smoking in the home
Using saline (salt water) nasal drops for babies who are having trouble feeding/ breastfeeding, they are available from pharmacies without a prescription

It is important to note that antibiotics will not work in the treatment of RSV; they are only effective against bacterial infections.

Children may still get their routine vaccines, even with cold symptoms, a low-grade fever or mild illness; this will not affect how well the body responds to a vaccine. Those with moderate or serious illness may need to wait until they are better to get some vaccines; particularly if they have an underlying chronic illness or an already weakened immune system (e.g. on chemotherapy). If you are unsure, please seek advice from your child’s health care professional.

Contact your GP or call 111 if:
•You are worried about your child.
•Your child has taken less than half their usual amount during the last 2 or 3 feeds, or they have had a dry nappy for 12 hours or more.
•Your child has a persistent high temperature of 37.8C or above

Remember Covid has not gone away and if you are concerned that your child may have covid contact 111 for advice

Dial 190 for an ambulance if:
•Your child is having difficulty breathing.
•Your child's tongue or lips are blue.
•There are long pauses in your child's breathing.

Good respiratory and hand hygiene can reduce the spread of respiratory infections. Parents are advised to carry tissues and use them to catch coughs or sneezes, bin the used tissues as soon as possible and wash your hands (with soap and warm water or hand sanitiser) to kill the germs.

This Advice from Carter and the GHA is in line with the big campaign - Biggest flu programme in history to roll out for winter 2021 so of course they have to ramp up the fear. "Those eligible for NHS influenza vaccination in 2021 to 2022 are: all children aged 2 to 15 (but not 16 years or older).

Their fear-mongering and fear-porn is predictable. What is their answer going for these respiratory illnesses? To shot them up with poisons? Of course, they could be covering their tracks for the upcoming adverse effects of those who do get shot.

This is to heighten the FEAR that children could be at risk, with the end goal of getting them to take a jab – if it's not going to be the covid one, then get them to take the flu shot, which puts them more at risk of getting this thing called covid (aka severe flu).

Concerning the jab, parents should investigate MIS-C, because children who get the marketed jab could develop it. And there's Kawasaki Disease – will that enter the scene?

Giving children two doses of a coronavirus vaccine could potentially prevent thousands of cases of long Covid, a new study has suggested.

Children as young as 12 in the UK are now eligible for their first shot of the Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine.

However, vaccination experts are yet to advise if and when children should get the full course – or two doses.

The new study saw researchers conduct a risk/benefit analysis of teenagers aged 12 to 17 getting both doses of the vaccine.

Nearly 750 school pupils in Gibraltar received the Covid-19 vaccine on Tuesday as the vaccination programme for 12 to 15 year olds commenced in Westside School.

The recent arrival of an additional 8,000 doses of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccines last week brought the programme ahead by two to three weeks instead of being administrated during the mid-term break.

There will be an additional vaccination clinic for 12 to 15 year olds during November to allow young people who may have changed their minds and now want to be vaccinated, or those who were unable to be vaccinated today, to receive their vaccine, a spokesman for No.6 Convent Place said.

The rollout of the vaccination programme was welcomed by those in the GHA and Public Health Gibraltar.

Dr Helen Carter, Director of Public Health said: “I am delighted that we have been able to commence the vaccination programme for young people earlier than originally planned, and specifically before the mid-term break.”

“This will help protect the overall population of Gibraltar and young people themselves from this horrible virus.”

“This is another step along the road to helping us live with the virus.”

“We know that the vaccine is effective in terms of preventing most of the serious consequences of this disease”.

Professor Ian Cumming, chairman of the vaccination committee, said “Team GHA/ERS” has rallied round to deliver a remarkable Covid vaccination programme for young people.

This is being run in addition to the programme to deliver first doses, second doses and booster jots.

“As of close of play last night, almost 84,000 doses of vaccine against Covid-19 have been given in Gibraltar since January 2021,” Prof Cumming said.

“Included in this figure are over 4,000 booster doses given to front line health and care staff, people over 50, and clinically vulnerable people.”

“This phase of the vaccination programme will continue until the end of November.”

“The UK government has confirmed that Gibraltar will continue to be supplied with vaccine to complete this phase of the programme in this time-scale”.

The Minister for Health and Care, Samantha Sacramento, said: “A team of over 20 GHA and ERS staff including doctors, nurses, allied health professionals and administrative staff gathered at Westside School at 8am on Tuesday morning to set up a temporary vaccination clinic in the school hall.”

“Vaccination commenced at 9am and by 9.45am over 100 young people had been vaccinated.”

“The plan was to vaccinate over 700 young people by the end of the school day, however, we received a high uptake and thanks to the hard work of our dedicated staff we exceeded our expectations and vaccinated nearly 750 12 to 15-year olds.”

“I would like to pass on my grateful thanks to everyone involved for their help and support in this programme, which has been a real team effort across health and education, including all the secondary schools in Gibraltar.”

“I would also like to pass on my grateful thanks once again to the UK government for continuing to supply Gibraltar with this precious vaccine.”

The Health Authority is preparing to offer paediatric vaccines to 5 to 11 year old children in early March, with more details to be announced shortly.

This was announced by the Ministry of Health, as it called on those who haven't yet had their Pfizer vaccine or booster to come forward before current supplies expire. It says these are due to expire in June, with no guarantee of future supplies to Gibraltar.

After June, Gibraltar will have access to small quantities of AstraZeneca vaccines for people over 40, but there will not be regular clinics.

Those wishing to be fully-vaccinated, therefore, are encouraged to come forward immediately, so the GHA can meet the required time interval between doses. Anyone who comes forward after stocks expire will be placed on a waiting list for any future vaccination programme.

The Minister for Health said there is still a very high rate of COVID-19 case in Gibraltar, and vaccination is proven as the best way to protect yourself and your loved ones against hospitalisation and death.

Samantha Sacramento called on everyone who hasn't already been vaccinated, or who needs a second or a booster dose, to come forward immediately, before it's too late.
