European Union biofuels goals seen behind deforested area as big as the Netherlands – Lumber from South America and SE United States

BRUSSELS: European Union targets to boost biofuel use are likely to have led to the deforestation of an area roughly the size of the Netherlands over the last decade to expand soy, palm and other oil crops, a report said on Monday.

The report analysed biodiesel production and consumption data from three statistical and market analysis agencies - Oil World, Stratas Advisors and Eurostat.

It found that EU demand for biodiesel required the cultivation of 1.1 million hectares (2.7 million acres) of palm in Southeast Asia and 2.9 million hectares (7.2 million acres) of soybeans in South America.

That suggests efforts to replace polluting fuels such as diesel with biofuels are paradoxically increasing planet-warming carbon dioxide emissions, said Laura Buffet, T&E's energy director.

This is where their Green plans are more like the Pale Horse mentioned in Revelation -

The fourth horseman of the Apocalypse rode a pale horse. "And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was DEATH , and HELL (fire) followed with him. And power was given unto them (the four horsemen) over the fourth part (1/4) of the earth, to kill with sword (weapons), and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth." This horseman rode on a pale /sick horse (sickly GREEN in the Greek original text). The fourth horseman represents pollution and nature dying (sickly green ) with famines; pestilences and plagues brought about by climatic changes caused by deforestation and pollution. The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.

Deforestation is a also a Sign of the End Times.

Just a thought - if starvation is a major concern for NGOs; and leaders talk about ending starvation - Why are they using food crops for fuel? Can't bio-fuel be made with waste?

How marginalized communities in the U.S. Southeast are paying the price for ‘green energy’ in Europe

EU directive left major loophole

Encouraged by government subsidies, European power plants began importing biomass from the largest wood producing region in the world: the American Southeast. North Carolina has been “ground zero” for the wood pellet industry.

The EU directive that encouraged the pivot to biomass also left a loophole — it did not prevent the leveling of rooted trees for wood pellet production.

In 2009, the European Union (EU) pledged to curb greenhouse gas emissions, urging its member states to shift from fossil fuels to renewables. In its Renewable Energy Directive (RED), the EU classified biomass as a renewable energy source — on par with wind and solar power. As a result, the directive prompted state governments to incentivize energy providers to burn biomass instead of coal — and drove up demand for wood.

EU was celebrated in headlines across the world when renewable energy surpassed the use of fossil fuels on the continent for the first time in history.

Cutting down trees and burning them for power is a renewable energy source feels counterintuitive.

Almost 800 scientists who wrote a 2018 letter to the European parliament, pushing members to amend the current directive “to avoid expansive harm to the world’s forests...

Still, the biomass industry is not showing any signs of slowing down. Drax, a British company that operates the largest UK power plant, has acquired several wood pellet plants in the American South and is developing others.

The EU adopted this methodology in its Renewable Energy Directive, allowing energy companies to burn biomass produced in the US without having to report the emissions.

Ultimately, Europe is not reducing emissions by burning American trees — it’s just outsourcing them to the United States.

By failing to restrict biomass to the byproduct from manufacturing paper, furniture or lumber, Europe created a strong incentive to cut down whole trees and turn them into wood pellets.

“I can’t think of anything that harms nature more than cutting down trees and burning them,” said William Moomaw, professor emeritus of international environmental policy at Tufts University.
