Russia claims destroyed Ukraine’s ‘last warship’

Russia on Wednesday claimed it had destroyed the last major warship of the Ukrainian naval forces, which it said was stationed in the southern port of Odesa.

“On May 29, a high-precision strike by the Russian Air Force on a ship anchorage site in the port of Odesa destroyed the last warship of the Ukrainian Navy, the ‘Yuri Olefirenko’,” the Russian army said in its daily briefing.

AFP was not able to independently confirm the claim.

A spokesperson for the Ukrainian Naval Force declined to comment.

The Yuri Olefirenko is a medium-size landing ship for troops and vehicles.

First named “Kirovograd”, the ship was renamed in 2016 in honour of a Ukrainian marine killed near Mariupol in 2015.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky decorated its crew in June 2022.

Russian Firms Invest $2.7 Billion in Iran’s Oil Industry: Official

Russian firms has invested 2.7 bln in Iran's oil industry, the chairman of Iran-Russia Chamber of Commerce said.

Hadi Tizhoush Taban made the comment on Friday and emphasized that use of national currencies of the two countries of Iran and Russia in rials and ruble has thus far increased by 60 percent using the removal of US dollar in bilateral transactions.

Regarding the development of trade and economic activities between Iran and Russia, he said, “Following the visit of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi to the Russian Federation, the two countries agreed to reach value of bilateral trade exchanges up to $10 billion.”

For this purpose, Governor of Central Bank of Iran (CBI) Mohammadreza Farzin and chairman of Iranian Parliament’s Economic Commission traveled to Russia with the aim of expanding economic, monetary and banking ties between the two countries, Tizhoush Taban told IRNA.

Elsewhere in his remarks, the chairman pointed to Iran-Russia Business Forum and added, “In this line, the Forum was held with the participation of 120-member economic delegation from Russia and economic activists of Iran to broaden bilateral ties in economic sphere.”

The development of trade ties between the two countries requires provision of facilities in at least three land, sea, rail and air transportation fields, he stressed.

In this regard, Iran and Russia launched a settlement system using their own currencies, he said, adding that Iran and Russia have taken giant strides to sideline US dollar from bilateral trade exchanges.

Moscow urges world to ‘condemn criminal acts’ of Ukraine after dam damage

Moscow on Tuesday urged the international community to condemn Ukrainian authorities for committing “criminal acts” after a major Russian-held dam in southern Ukraine was damaged, sparking fears of a humanitarian disaster.

“We call on the world community to condemn the criminal acts of the Ukrainian authorities, which are increasingly inhuman and pose a serious threat to regional and global security,” the Russian foreign ministry said in a statement.

Hackers claim to have crippled Russia’s banking system

https://cybernews.com/cyber-war/infotel-hack-impacts-russian-banks/

Pro-Ukrainian hacktivists allegedly took down Infotel, a Russian internet service provider (ISP) crucial for operating a platform that Russian banks use to facilitate the financial system.

Cyber Anarchy Squad, a pro-Kyiv hacker collective, took credit for taking down Infotel, a Moscow-based ISP. The service provider has been down since June 8th, and its site was still inaccessible at the time of writing this article.

“Their entire infrastructure is destroyed, there is nothing left alive there. Now let them try to rebuild everything — they have as much chance as Russia is to have an easy life,” attackers said on their Telegram channel.

While taking down a single ISP is not a tectonic event, the attack’s side effects have the potential to have severe ramifications for Russia’s banking system: Infotel runs the Automated System of Electronic Interaction (ASEI) for the Central Bank of Russia.

Commercial banks, credit unions, and other businesses use ASEI for secure communications between different organizations. The system enables secure document exchange, data transfer, digital signature, and other crucial activities to facilitate the banking system.

In theory, without ASEI, the ability for institutions to exchange financial information on loans and transactions is severely limited. While backup systems could assist during downtime, delays would be unavoidable.

Since banks rely on AESI to process transactions, a sudden shutdown would halt interbank comms, preventing some of the transactions from taking place.

Hacktivists claim that they stole Infotel’s data before crippling the ISP, which revealed that AESI serves 400 customers in Russia, with 25% of the total represented by commercial banks and the rest by credit institutions, car dealerships, connection providers, and other entities.

Putin gives timeline for deployment of nukes to Belarus

The Russian president said that the delivery of the weapons will begin immediately after facilities for their storage are prepared

The deployment of Russian nuclear weapons in Belarus will begin as soon as adaptation work at the relevant storage facilities is completed, around the first week of July, Russian President Vladimir Putin said during a meeting with his Belarusian counterpart on Friday.

Belarus Has Begun Taking Delivery of ‘Powerful’ Russian Nukes

President Alexander Lukashenko has confirmed in fresh remarks to Russian state television that Belarus has begun taking delivery of Russian tactical nuclear weapons which had earlier been promised by President Vladimir Putin.

Lukashenko in remarks to Rossiya-1 TV channel boasted that the tactical nukes are three times more powerful that the atomic bombs dropped by the United States in World War II on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

“We have missiles and bombs that we have received from Russia,” Lukashenko confirmed in the interview, which was also carried by Belarus’ Belta state news agency.

“The bombs are three times more powerful than those (dropped on) Hiroshima and Nagasaki,” he added, in footage which appeared to feature a military storage facility in the background.

Though stationed on Belarusian territory, the nuclear weapons will remain under the control of Russia’s military, and the Kremlin hasn’t given any sign it has altered its nuclear use doctrine, which stipulates they can only be launched if Russia and its population are under existential threat.

Back in March, Putin had hinted there may have already been Russian nukes stationed in Belarus, but these and statements since then have remained perhaps purposefully ambiguous.

CBS recounts of what Putin said at the time as follows:

Russia has ratcheted up tensions with the West amid its ongoing war against Ukraine, with President Vladimir Putin saying Moscow will deploy “tactical nuclear weapons” in Belarus. The Russian leader said 10 fighter jets capable of carrying tactical nuclear weapons — generally a reference to smaller weapons used for limited battlefield attacks, rather than larger, long-range “strategic” nuclear weapons — were already deployed in Belarus. Putin said Russia would also position nuclear-armed Iskander hypersonic missiles, with a range of around 300 miles, in Belarus.

The Biden administration has meanwhile consistently condemned the Russian leader’s “irresponsible nuclear rhetoric,” and has said “no other country is inflicting such damage on arms control, nor seeking to undermine strategic stability in Europe.” The West has viewed movement of the nukes into Belarus as a major escalation and provocation, but so far rhetoric of NATO officials surrounding this has remained calm.

However, the Kremlin has in response pointed out that the US has stationed nukes in five non-nuclear states across Europe, and even in Turkey.

Russia: West 'aims to undermine Russia's domestic political stability' ahead of our 2024 presidential election - Lavrov

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov claimed that Western countries were attempting to 'undermine domestic political stability' ahead of the 2024 Russian presidential election, while speaking at a meeting of the United Russia party's General Council Commission on International Co-operation and Support of Compatriots Abroad, in Moscow on Monday.

"The Americans make no secret of their intentions to do everything possible to contain China as well. <...> The bloody coup d'etat in Ukraine in 2014 was attempted again six years later in Belarus. Unsuccessfully. They will clearly not stop there. They openly aim to undermine domestic political stability in our country, especially in the context of next year's presidential election," Lavrov said.

The Russian presidential election is scheduled for March 2024.

Meanwhile, Lavrov also stated that the West was waging an 'undeclared hybrid war' against Russia.

"The collective West, led by the United States, led by the Anglo-Saxons, it can even be said, is waging an undeclared hybrid war against Russia. The Kiev regime is being used as a tool. The Nazis in Ukraine are supplied with modern weapons, ammunition, they send instructors and mercenaries there. The enemies declare their goals openly - to defeat the Russian army on the battlefield, to undermine our political and economic sovereignty, to push Russia to the margins of world politics," the foreign minister said.

Lavrov noted that the Greater Eurasian Partnership had become the 'flagship project' of Russia’s foreign policy.

"Our flagship foreign policy project is to support the concept of the Greater Eurasian Partnership. It is about facilitating the objective process of forming a broad integration open to all the states and associations of our vast continent. Practical steps are already being taken," he continued.

Moscow launched a military offensive in Ukraine in late February 2022 after recognising the independence of the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics (DPR and LPR), claiming that Kiev had failed to guarantee their special status under the 2014 Minsk Agreements, and urging Ukraine to declare itself officially neutral and give assurances that it would never join NATO.

Kiev denounced the Russian action as an invasion. President Volodymyr Zelensky imposed martial law throughout the country, announcing a general mobilisation, while the EU and the US imposed several rounds of sanctions on Moscow.

Russia Begins Process to WITHDRAW from World Trade Organization and World Health Organization

The Russian government is starting the process of unilaterally withdrawing from a series of international bodies, including the World Trade Organization and the World Health Organization, the Russian Duma’s Deputy Speaker Pyotr Tolstoy said on Tuesday.

"We have work to revise our international obligations, treaties that today bring no benefit, but instead directly harm our country. The Foreign Ministry sent a list of such agreements to the State Duma,” Tolstoy said. “Together with the Federation Council, we plan to analyze them and to propose to withdraw," he added.

Tolstoy: the Foreign Ministry sent proposals to the State Duma on the denunciation of international agreements After Russia left the Council of Europe, next in line is withdrawal from the WTO and WHO, the parliamentarian noted.

A list of agreements of the Russian Federation with international organizations has been sent to the State Duma for consideration with a view to denunciation. The State Duma Deputy Chairman said this Peter Tolstoy at plenary meeting X of the Parliamentary Meetings in the Federation Council. They are held as part of the XXX International Educational Readings: « On the 350th anniversary of Peter I: secular peace and religiosity ».

After Russia left the Council of Europe, now it is next in turn to leave the WTO and WHO, Tolstoy noted.

For Russia, membership in a number of international supranational organizations, «, who tried to impose their rules on us, which they now so easily refused to comply with », the politician believes, became a gracious experience.

« It seems to me that this is important — Russia left the Council of Europe, now next in line is the withdrawal from the WTO and WHO, which in relation to our country have already neglected their obligations », — the politician said.

Parliamentarians, he said, will have to work to review international obligations, treaties that are not beneficial, but direct damage to our country.

« MID sent a list of such agreements to the State Duma, together with the Federation Council we plan to analyze and propose denouncing these agreements », — told Tolstoy.

Earlier, April 20, the chairman of the State Duma Vyacheslav Volodin proposed to give a protocol order to the Chamber Committee on Economic Policy together with the Cabinet to study the feasibility of Russia's participation in a number of international organizations.

« Regarding the assessment of participation in international organizations, let's prepare a protocol order for the relevant committee. The committee will study with the Government, and they will give us an answer », — said the speaker.

The issue of Russia's participation in international organizations was raised by the deputy chairman of the State Duma Committee on Labor, Social Policy and Veterans Affairs Nikolay Kolomeytsev ( KPRF ). The parliamentarian invited the State Duma Committee on Economic Policy to request information from the Government on what economic benefits Russia will be given by its continued presence in international organizations — WTO, IMF, WHO and others.

Ukraine exhuming old graves to bury conflict victims – NYT

Russia insists the West is conducting a proxy war “to the last Ukrainian”

https://www.rt.com/russia/578343-lviv-military-funerals-nyt/

Ukrainian cemeteries are filling up with the bodies of soldiers killed on the frontline, so much that authorities sometimes have to exhume old graves to make room for the newly deceased, The New York Times has reported. Russia has warned that by arming Kiev, Western nations were increasing the cost of the war for Ukrainians.

The Monday article in the Times reported on the “seemingly countless funerals” taking place in the western Ukrainian city of Lviv. The magnitude of frontline losses is being felt by the community, as fresh graves multiply in the cemeteries, the newspaper said.

A groundskeeper at one told the US outlet that since the beginning of hostilities in February last year, the military burials in her care grew in number from a small cluster to some 500. The management decided to exhume unmarked graves from World War I to make room for the newly deceased, she added.

In another example this week, the mayor of Ivano-Frankivsk, another western Ukrainian regional capital, announced that visitors to the city cemetery will be able to rent bicycles and electric scooters. Ruslan Martsinkiv said the service was his administration’s response to complaints by relatives who found it difficult to move around the rapidly growing premises.

Both Ukraine and Russia refuse to publish their own frontline casualties and each claim that its opponent has sustained more than reported. Kiev is currently engaged in a counteroffensive against Russian defensive positions, trying to make use of the tanks and other military equipment supplied to it by Western nations. The push has so far reportedly come at a great cost with no significant territorial gains achieved.

Moscow has accused the US and its allies of causing the armed conflict in the first place, by moving NATO infrastructure into Ukraine and threatening Russian national security.

Western nations that arm Kiev allegedly stopped it from striking a peace deal in the first months of the conflict, and are waging a proxy war on Russia “to the last Ukrainian,” officials in Moscow have claimed. The Russian government said it was determined to safeguard its nation despite the cost.

Lavrov: let NATO fight if it does not want to freeze the conflict in Ukraine

https://tass.ru/politika/18068577

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that if the North Atlantic Alliance ( NATO ) says they are opposed to freezing the conflict in Ukraine, then "let them fight".

"If NATO, through the mouth of the [ Yens Alliance Secretary ] Stoltenbeg once again declares that they are against freezing, as they put it, conflict in Ukraine, then they want to fight. Well, let them fight! "Said the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry to journalists following a meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the states parties to the Collective Security Treaty Organization.

The head of Russian diplomacy emphasized that Russia is ready for this. "We have long understood the goals of NATO in the situation around Ukraine. These goals were formed for many years after the coup. Now NATO is trying to implement them, "he said.

According to Lavrov, gradually some politicians and experts in the West "express and understand the true causes of what is happening and what is actually happening on earth". However, he added, "if they claim that they are not waging war against Russia, but actually do exactly this, recognizing that without pumping the Ukrainian regime with weapons, without providing intelligence, satellite information, goal-setting, the Ukrainian situation would have long been completed, it is in fact a recognition that they are a direct participant in the hybrid and hot war declared against Russia"

FSB called on Wagner PMC fighters to take steps to detain Prigogin

Statements and actions of the founder of the Wagner PMC, Yevgeny Prigozhin, are actually calls for the outbreak of armed civil conflict, said on Saturday at the center of public relations of the FSB of Russia.
