Russia says its forces freed hostages from mosque in Mariupol

The mosque was unblocked and 29 militants were killed

MOSCOW, April 17. /TASS/. Russian Defense Ministry Spokesman Major General Igor Konashenkov on Sunday said Russian special forces freed hostages that were held in a Turkish mosque in Mariupol.

"A special operation to free hostages, who were held in Turkish mosque by Ukrainian Nazis, was conducted on April 16 during offensive actions to liberate Mariupol and at the request of Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan," the spokesman said.

Konashenkov said thanks to selfless actions by a Russian special forces team the mosque was unblocked and 29 militants, including foreign mercenaries, were killed. "The hostages, who are citizens of one of the CIS countries, were freed and taken to a safe location," he said.

The first images of the Russian cruiser Moskva after the attack that sank it

The Ukrainian attack on the Russian missile cruiser Moskva on April 14 was surrounded by a certain mystery due to the absence of images. Until now.

Мike Right (@BormanIke) posted this photo of the damaged ship at 0:12 CET, noting the following: “And here is the first confirmed picture of “Moscow” after the incident. There are traces of a powerful fire in the compartments, traces of damage to the skin under the main superstructure and a capsize to port (all, according to reports from the Ukrainian Armed Forces). PU with KR are intact, their detonation obviously did not occur.”

In a second tweet, Mike points out that the photo was taken on April 15, that is, the same day it sank as a result of the damage sustained in the attack with two Ukrainian R-360 Neptun missiles.

A few minutes later, at 0:41 CET, Ukraine Weapons Tracker posted this other photo of the damaged ship, taken from a further distance than the previous one. The column of smoke that rises from the central part of the ship is larger and thicker, and shows the serious damage suffered in the Ukrainian attack.

Russia Is Returning To The Gold Standard And China Is Going To Be Next

The most profound seismic shift in the global monetary bedrock is happening right before our eyes, and no one seems to notice or care. Eventually, they will have to.

No sooner was it that I wrote an article talking about how Russia was going to back the ruble with gold than “one of the Russia’s most powerful security/intelligence officers and a close ally of Putin” has admitted the country’s intentions to do just that.

And I’m predicting that no sooner will the gravity of this decision finally sink in with the West that China will follow closely in Russia’s footsteps and do the same.

Russia backing its currency with gold represents one of the most drastic changes to the foreign currency market in decades. As of 2022, precisely zero countries still adhere to a gold standard, though many countries still hold gold in reserve.

The new global monetary system is likely going to look like Russia, China, India, Saudi Arabia and other countries with commodity-backed, sound money on one side - and the west and our allies, with our “infinite” fiat, under the tutelage of rocket surgeon Neel Kashkari, on the other.

Despite the enormity of the situation, the news hasn’t really been digested by global markets yet. The FX market has been relatively calm, but for the ruble strengthening, and gold prices have crashed so far this week, with front month futures falling nearly $50/oz. on Monday, back down to about $1,860/oz.

Aside from the FX market, the news also hasn’t been digested by US politicians or financial “thought leaders” yet.

However, there are underground rumblings starting to catch the ears of those who are actively listening. Ronan Manly wrote for BullionStar.com last week:

On Tuesday 26 April in an interview with newspaper Rossiyskaya Gazeta (RG), the Secretary of the Russian Federation’s Security Council, Nikolai Patrushev, said that Russian experts are working on a project to back the Russian ruble with gold and other commodities.

Manly was kind enough to translate the interview with RG, which stated Russia’s intentions to back the ruble with gold in crystal clear fashion:

RG Question: And what do we need to do to ensure the ruble’s sovereignty?

Nikolai Patrushev: “For any national financial system to be sovereignized, its means of payment must have intrinsic value and price stability, without being pegged to the dollar.

Now experts are working on a project proposed by the scientific community to create a two-circuit monetary and financial system.

In particular, it is proposed to determine the value of the ruble, which should be backed by both gold and a group of goods that are currency values, and to put the ruble exchange rate in line with the real purchasing power parity.”

Manly concludes, matter-of-factly:

So there you have it. The Russian Government is actively working on creating a gold and commodity backed Russian ruble with intrinsic value which is outside the orbit of the US dollar.

What we are seeing now is Nikolai Patrushev and the Kremlin confirming this simple equation of linking the Russian ruble to gold and commodities. In other words, the beginning of a multilateral gold and commodity backed monetary system, i.e. Bretton Woods III.

Just days ago I published an in-depth analysis by my friend Lawrence Lepard, about what Bretton Woods III might look like. For anyone concerned about the future of the monetary system, it is a must-read.

Finally, to take Manly’s analysis one step further, I think China isn’t going to be far behind Russia in adopting a gold standard.

Going back to last summer, before the invasion of Ukraine happened and before inflation was an issue, I wrote an article arguing that it was the most common sense scenario for China to affix its new digital currency to gold.

That was before Russia decided they were ready to take a stand against the west’s monetary policies and before China became interested in buying distressed strategic oil assets from Russia while the rest of the globe tries to shut the country down economically.

Now, Russia and China are closer than they’ve ever been and arguably more unified in their interests of keeping the U.S., the west and NATO in check than they’ve ever been.

China has also kept one eye on Taiwan, as I noted in an article last month exploring whether or not President Xi is actively entertaining the idea of catalyzing World War III. For now, those concerns have taken a back seat to the country’s bizarre recent reaction to a Covid “outbreak” that it is fruitlessly trying to control.

Meanwhile, as Russia accepts payment for oil only in rubles or gold, “the digital yuan has already been piloted in various Chinese cities and was used in more than $8 billion worth of transactions in the second half of 2021,” CNN reported earlier this year. In other words, the rubber is starting to hit the road for China’s digital currency.

And, with everyone locked in their homes once again, it’s extremely convenient timing.

Is the picture becoming clear yet, or do I need to spell it out for you?

If you haven’t read them yet, numerous articles that explain my position on Russia and China creating their own monetary system include:

The nationalist movement in Ukraine didn’t just happen; it took years to build. It's been growing for years, nurtured by western curators and supported by western funds. By the beginning of the Maidan, an entire network of neo-nazi units had already been up and running in Ukraine, but the Ukrainian government didn’t prosecute them. Ready and able military and terrorist units dispersed and showed up at anti-Maidan meetings in Ukraine’s cities. The years 2019 and 2020 saw meetings and protests in Kiev demanding the denial of special status for the DNR and LNR breakaway regions.

One of its main goals was to form an ideology that would dehumanise Russians and break all ties that existed for decades before. Initially, Russians weren't seen as a minority in Ukraine, but the anti-Russian sentiment gradually became overwhelming. Nationalists have been taught how to lead a war on social media, eventually launching a guided communication battle against the Russian people.

Stepan Bandera was the head of the Ukrainian nationalist organisation in 1929. In 1934, the Gestapo accepted the Berlin chapter of the organisation — he organised terrorist acts, killing officials. In 1941, the Ukrainian nationalist organisation was responsible for the biggest Jewish pogrom in Lvov, killing about 7,000 people. Yet, in 2010, Stepan Bandera was pronounced a national hero, with torch-lit marches in his honour ever since.

Q-Anon' Bears Striking Resemblance to Bolshevik Psy-Op From 1920s Known As 'Operation Trust'

operation-trust-q-anon-psy-op-1

" Operation Trust" was a Bolshevik counterintelligence operation run from 1921 to 1926 aimed at neutralizing opposition by creating the false impression that a powerful group of military leaders had organized to stop the communists' takeover.

Here's an except on the "Trust" operation from pages 13-14 of Soviet defector Anatoliy Golitsyn's book, "New Lies for Old":

The similarities with the Q-Anon "Trust The Plan™" psy-op are remarkable.

One of the more disturbing aspects of the "Qanon" online Trump base pacification hoax is that while it claims to be fighting the "deep state" (permanent security complex) it promotes the rendition of Edward @Snowden and CIA regime change in Iran. pic.twitter.com/WG4jfmvEeG

From Wikipedia's article on Operation Trust:

Operation Trust was a counterintelligence operation of the State Political Directorate (GPU) of the Soviet Union. The operation, which was set up by GPU's predecessor Cheka, ran from 1921 to 1926, set up a fake anti-Bolshevik resistance organization, "Monarchist Union of Central Russia", MUCR, in order to help the OGPU identify real monarchists and anti-Bolsheviks. The created front company was called the Moscow Municipal Credit Association.

...] The one Western historian who had limited access to the Trust files, John Costello, reported that they comprised thirty-seven volumes and were such a bewildering welter of double-agents, changed code names, and interlocking deception operations with "the complexity of a symphonic score", that Russian historians from the Intelligence Service had difficulty separating fact from fantasy.
That sounds like the Confucius-style nonsense put out by Q-Anon.

Is General Flynn our General Brusliv?

Q-Anon made Trump supporters who were right to be angry over the criminal nature of our ruling class delude themselves with fantasies that "White hats" in the military were going to save us while Attorney General William Barr was busy covering-up the Jeffrey Epstein case and the Kushner administration was busy pardoning fraudsters who donated to the Aleph Institute and releasing traitor Jonathan Pollard from parole to "make aliyah" in Israel.

Donald Trump condemned his own supporters and called for them to be prosecuted to "the fullest extent of the law," just days after he chose to pardon "the king of medicare fraud" & release traitor Jonathan Pollard from parole to "make aliyah" in Israel. http://www.informationliberation.com/?id=61992

Just as opposition were outed and arrested by Operation Trust, potentially dozens of Q-Anoners were outed and arrested as a result of the march on the Capitol.

Many of the neocons in our government are the literal descendants of Trotskyites, so it's not out of the question they'd pull the same trick twice.

This Q-Anon operation has had some blowback -- Q-believing Air Force veteran Ashli Babbitt was horrifically executed in cold blood by a Capitol police officer and turned into a martyr -- but the movement has gotten tons of Trump supporters thrown in prison and labeled domestic terrorists.

The Biden administration is now plotting to use the events of Jan 6 to justify PATRIOT Act 2.0 which aims to criminalize all dissent as domestic terrorism.

Their neo-Bolshevik revolution is almost complete.

It doesn't require "anonymous leaks" from "secret military intelligence officers" to witness the conspiratorial treachery our government is committing out in the open!

How true, and while everyone is focused on Ukraine/Russia,
It seems as though Ethiopia is set to fail. Civil war, famine, and death are knocking at it's door, with destruction ravaging it's cities, and the domino effect spilling over into near by countries.

Ethiopia: An All-Out War Looks Imminent

Ethiopia is in the midst of a civil war that has brought famine and economic crisis in its wake. As public anger grows, the conflict may be heading towards a bloody conclusion.

Russia: Victory Day 2022 And Why Commemoration Of The End Of WWII Matters Today

Even in the darkest days of the pandemic in 2020 Russia didn't cancel Victory Day , its anniversary of the end of the second world war, it was just postponed. This year, the Kremlin promises a parade on May 9 with 11,000 servicemen and women plus 62 airplanes and 15 helicopters. Eight MiG-29s will form the letter Z, the symbol adopted by supporters of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

For the 2022 ceremony in Moscow's Red Square the Kremlin is desperate to have a victory from the Ukraine war to announce. Commentators suggest that the recent military reorientation towards Ukraine's Donbas region was driven by a May 9 deadline. More worrying, some fear that if that victory proves elusive, the day might instead be used as a“fulcrum” for a wider mobilisation of forces.

But why is this anniversary such a powerful force in Russian politics? During the worst days of the second world war, Soviet leader Joseph Stalin was conspicuously absent from his country's media. The cult that had been constructed around him in the 1930s seemed to have been abandoned. But then came victory in Europe, celebrated on May 9, a day after VE Day (fighting stopped a day later in Russia ). On a radio broadcast on May 9 1945 Stalin announced:

In the weeks that followed, the first demobilised soldiers returned home. In cities across the Soviet Union, activists organised receptions : banners, flowers, portraits of Stalin, throngs of happy citizens celebrating the end of war, and paying tribute to the soldiers.

The story of how those war veterans were treated – and their war commemorated – has been rather complex. In 1945, with the economy in ruins, and the Soviet people injured, grieving and traumatised, remembering the war was painful and potentially divisive . It took at least two decades for war remembrance to emerge as a core component of Soviet – and later Russian – patriotism.

After the happy homecomings, life was often hard for veterans in the late 1940s . Promises were made to them – a free ticket home, a job waiting, a new suit of clothing and footwear, monetary recompense for their service, financial help building or repairing homes – but the reality fell drastically short. Many veterans, especially those who had been injured in the war, found themselves homeless and jobless. Veterans became buskers, fortune tellers and beggars.

One group of workers wrote directly to Stalin to complain about the state's failure to provide for the veterans. They told him :“We don't want to see our Heroes – our victorious warriors – standing in queues, trading at the market, living from hand to mouth, but instead fully provided for materially, well-dressed (preferably in a special uniform), living in light apartments and with the highest weekly allowances and privileges that our possibly [sic] in our Great Soviet country.” In 1947, May 9 was downgraded: no longer a state holiday, it became a regular working day.

Moscow announced a new phase of the Ukraine war plan was to take full control of southern and eastern Ukraine and connect the Donbas region with Crimea, leaving places such as the town of Irpin, pictured here, devastated.

Under Stalin, victory in the war was celebrated primarily in terms of his own genius as leader. The 1949 film Fall of Berlin conceived as a gift to Stalin for his 70th birthday was the climax of this post-war leader cult. In a tremendous finale Stalin, clad all in white arrives in Berlin to oversee the soldiers' joyous celebrations; the hero-soldier and his love interest are reunited, but almost immediately she turns to Stalin and asks him for a kiss, gushing gratitude for all he had done for the people.

After Stalin died in 1953, his successor Nikita Khrushchev began to dismantle many aspects of the Stalin cult , including his reputation as a great military leader. In his famous“secret speech” of 1956, Khrushchev ridiculed Stalin and his leadership. Films made in this period of political and cultural thaw turned the spotlight away from Stalin and began to probe the experiences of a generation that suffered so much. Soviet filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky 's 1962 Ivan's Childhood is perhaps the most powerful of these.

It was not until the mid-1960s that the Soviet Union began to actively celebrate the second world war once more. In 1965, May 9 became a national holiday again. Two years later a new tomb of the unknown soldier was unveiled by the Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev . The desperate poverty people had experienced in the immediate aftermath of war had eased, and the veterans – now moving into middle and old age – were made into heroes. Each May 9, veterans would visit local schools, recount their experiences, and be presented with bouquets of flowers. Historian Nina Tumarkin writes:

What would happen to this patriotic celebration of the war once communism fell was not at all clear. In the 1990s, it seemed as if Russia's memory politics might go in a number of different directions . What kind of national identity would post-Soviet Russia embrace, and how would history be used in its construction? Since 2000, Putin has developed a clear direction: his brand of Russian nationalism is primarily an imperial one and he has called the disintegration of the Soviet Union a“major humanitarian tragedy”.

For Putin, not all of Soviet history is attractive, however. The violent regime change of 1917 was not a centenary he was inclined to celebrate, for example. In contrast, the end of the second world war continues to serve him well. The year 1945 can be commemorated as the moment when Moscow's global reach was at its greatest, while the veterans – few of whom are still alive – can be celebrated for their patriotic self-sacrifice and discipline. Another young generation are now being asked to do the same.

Russia-Ukraine War LIVE UPDATES

Putin Ally Reportedly Pushes Russia Toward War With Poland

A member of the Russian parliament and a top member of President Vladimir Putin's political party, United Russia, has reportedly suggested that Russia look to Poland after Ukraine in its quest for "denazification."

Oleg Morozov's comments, which were reported by news outlet Visegrád 24, echoed Putin's self-described goal of working to "denazify" Ukraine.

"Poland should be the next in the line for denazification process after Ukraine," Visegrád quoted Morozov as saying.

It was not immediately clear why Morozov reportedly believes that Poland is in need of "denazification," but the comments could further strain tensions between Russia and Europe amid the war in Ukraine. Poland is one of 30 NATO member nations, meaning that any potential Russian attempts to target the country could trigger a massive war with the military alliance.

Newsweek reached out to Morozov via the State Duma, the lower house of Russia's parliament, for comment and confirmation that he made these remarks.

Putin has not given any definitive indication on whether he may take aim at Poland in the future, but Polish Deputy Foreign Minister Pawel Jablonski said during an interview with Al Jazeera published in late March that it is an "absolute certainty" that Putin would like to attack Poland.

"At the same time, we're also quite certain that [Putin] will not do it now because he's too much occupied with what's happening in Ukraine," Jablonski added.

This is not the first time Morozov has taken aim at NATO in his rhetoric.

Last month, after Slovak Prime Minister Eduard Heger confirmed that Slovakia had donated an S-300 air defense system to Ukraine, Morozov said during an appearance on Russia's First Channel that "we have to make the collective West understand that they have no chance of winning this war."

Slovakia is a NATO country and one of several member nations that have provided Ukraine with weapons and supplies since the start of the war in late February.

"I am certain that in the very near future, we will see special operations, both from our air forces and from our special units, in order to destroy weapons shipments from NATO countries," Morozov said.

Morozov also said during the appearance that "a total war has begun."

Russia's physical war has so far not stretched beyond Ukraine's borders, even though the impacts of the conflict have been felt throughout the world. Putin has also refrained from officially declaring war on Ukraine.

Morozov accused the West of wanting the war in Ukraine "to continue for as long as possible."

"They presume that this war will exhaust our military and economic resources," Morozov added.
