It's basically only food the apes (Barbary macaques - they're not actually monkeys) are after.
Open bags; packets; anything that food is often contained in.
And that lady with the black bag might have had food or sweets in the bag that the ape smelled.
There's a ÂŁ500 fine (memory?) for feeding the apes, so that they don't get used to coming into town, or other populated areas, but they still do of course.
They are fed daily right at the top of the rock: far away from town - mostly vegetable and fruit cuts, but human food is obviously more interesting to them.
Also minibus tour services take visitors to the top: also at feeding times, and the operators are allowed to give the apes peanuts, which they do next to any tourists shoulder who wants one of the apes to jump onto their shoulder.
That's when one discovers how much they stink - ape smell; very different from human smell obviously.
And those macaques know they're the main attraction - partly hence the confidence

NYC Declares Monkeypox A Public Health Emergency
New York City, the epicenter of the Monkeypox outbreak, has declared a public health emergency. On Saturday, the New York City Health Department made the Big Apple the second major city to declare a pubic health emergency following San Francisco last week.
The announcement Saturday by Mayor Eric Adams and Health Commissioner Ashwin Vasan said as many as 150,000 city residents could be at risk of infection. The declaration will allow officials to issue emergency orders under the city health code and amend code provisions to implement measures to help slow the spread. This announcement comes shortly after Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) declared Monkeypox a âdisaster emergencyâ for the empire state.
New York had recorded 1,345 cases as of Friday, according to data compiled by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. California had the second-most, with 799. To date, there have been more than 22,000 Monkeypox cases reported in nearly 80 countries since May, with about 75 suspected deaths in Africa, mostly in Nigeria and Congo.
In response, the city is working with every level of government to receive more vaccines and expand testing capacity.

It's called the immune system, and thatâs what it was made to do by our Creator. No such system can function so fluidly, intricately, and magically, nor can it be replicated by any human being, ever.
Yet in these times of Sodom and Gomorrah, a decision was made to vaccinate boys.

THEY therefore decided the most effective way to prevent HPV in this category is to VACCINATE ALL BOYS before they become sexually active.
They decided to poison your child, risking disease and death, for the benefit of a few who are an abomination to Almighty God.

The Director of Public Health, Dr Helen Carter, has assessed the risk of Mpox in Gibraltar as âlowâ, after the World Health Organisation declared an outbreak a public health emergency of international concern.
Earlier this week, the WHO said the determined that the upsurge of mpox in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and a growing number of countries in Africa constitutes a public health emergency of international concern.
In Gibraltar, Dr Helen told the Chronicle the GHA has moved to enhanced surveillance and reviewed diagnostic pathways and treatment options.
âNo specific advice being published at this time but some general advice s will be placed on the GHA PH webpage,â she said.
Dr Carter said there is increased surveillance and should those who have visited the affected areas contact the GHA.
âAdvice is that if you are traveling to affected areas be mindful of the symptoms and route of transmission ie close skin to skin contact.â
Anyone who has travelled to an affected area and develops symptoms such as a blistering rash should call 111 for advice, where the GHA will assess the patient and advise on where to attend to be tested.
Mpox, previously known as monkeypox, is passed on through close physical contact, including during sexual contact, kissing, cuddling, or holding hands.
Symptoms include a high temperature, headache, muscle aches, backache, swollen glands, exhaustion, joint pain, and a rash.
UK health officials have said they are preparing for any potential cases of a new strain of mpox after the World Health Organisation declared outbreaks of the virus in Africa a global emergency.
The strain, known as clade 1b, emerged in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
World Health Organisation director-general Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus declared the outbreak in DRC a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC) under the International Health Regulations (2005) on Wednesday.
The virus had previously been declared a PHEIC in July 2022, but this was lifted in May 2023 after a decline in cases globally.
The clade 1b strain emerged last year, with 100 lab-confirmed cases also detected in countries that have not reported mpox before â Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda.
âThe emergence of a new clade of mpox, its rapid spread in eastern DRC, and the reporting of cases in several neighbouring countries are very worrying,â Dr Tedros said.
âOn top of outbreaks of other mpox clades in DRC and other countries in Africa, itâs clear that a co-ordinated international response is needed to stop these outbreaks and save lives.â
