The Beginnings

by Rudyard Kipling

It was not part of their blood,
It came to them very late
With long arrears to make good,
When the English began to hate.

They were not easily moved,
They were icy-willing to wait
Till every count should be proved,
Ere the English began to hate.

Their voices were even and low,
Their eyes were level and straight.
There was neither sign nor show,
When the English began to hate.

It was not preached to the crowd,
It was not taught by the State.
No man spoke it aloud,
When the English began to hate.

It was not suddenly bred,
It will not swiftly abate,
Through the chill years ahead,
When Time shall count from the date
That the English began to hate.

Thank you so much for this.

Beautiful verse from Kipling.
1:18 And the House of Jacob shall be a fire, and the House of Joseph a flame, and the House of Esau for stubble, and they shall kindle in them, and devour them; and there shall not be [any] remaining of the House of Esau; for the "I AM" hath spoken [it].

Out of Pandora’s box, so legend tells,
In times long past
a host of ills slipped
through
To make a bitter
time for all mankind.
I like to think a better spirit dwells
In our new world,
With finer things to do.
And if she could a
nobler chest unbind
She’d loose such boons
as peace
For us; a golden fleece:
Tender warm thoughts of love
For man and God above.
Oh come then, spirit, and fling wide the lid
To free for us the blessings that are hid.
