Tornado Ship Begins Surveillance and Deterrence Operations in the Strait and Alboran Sea

The Maritime Action Ship Tornado has set sail from the Rota naval base to begin surveillance and deterrence operations in national sovereignty maritime areas in the Strait of Gibraltar and the Alboran Sea.

The Tornado will carry out maritime security operations, including activities to verify and control maritime traffic, with the aim of ensuring freedom of navigation, according to the Chief of Defense Staff (EMAD).

Additionally, it will conduct naval presence actions near Alboran Island and in Spanish sovereign waters in North Africa.

The Tornado, part of the Maritime Operational Command and under the operational control of the Operations Command, has embarked a marine infantry security team for this mission, which enhances its capabilities.

It is one of the maritime action ships under the command of the Naval Command of the Canary Islands, based at the Arsenal of Las Palmas, and designed to carry out maritime security missions, protect national maritime interests, and control sovereignty spaces and areas of national interest.

The ship also collaborates with the State Security Forces at sea in operations against drug trafficking or terrorism and carries out missions to control and protect maritime traffic, monitor and control fishing, and combat marine pollution.

Additionally, the ship is scheduled to stop at the port of Algeciras on October 10 and 11, as well as the port of Málaga from October 18 to 20.

During its stay in port, in addition to its naval presence, open house events will be held for civilians who wish to visit the ship.
