The human-to-human transmission sounds made-up. Clearly, the cruise ship has serious sanitation issues.
Could the Hantatoxin / contaminated particles become airborne if released from aircraft (something similar to a crop duster)? If so, it would appear to be human-to-human transmission if the connection was not made to aircraft. It is not a "virus". It is a toxin. Similar, but not exactly, is an illness called Legionnaires. It is a toxin that formed and was released via central air conditioning ducts and other water storage systems.
Hantavirus is primarily spread through contact with infected rodent droppings, urine, or saliva, especially when these materials become airborne. Inhaling contaminated particles is the most common way to contract hantavirus, which can lead to serious respiratory illness.
Could be, just as the so-called "Black Death" could well have been a case of mass poisoning of the wells.....Interestingly another "disease" supposedly spread by rats. The playbook is old and long.
