The Spanish Foreign Affairs Minister will be visiting the Campo on Tuesday in an official capacity for the first time.
José Manuel Albares will be attending a PSOE Public Rally in San Roque, ahead of the European elections, but will earlier take the opportunity to meet with the Mayors and brief them on Treaty negotiations over Gibraltar.
It’s not known whether the meeting with the mayors is a courtesy call seeing as he’s in the area and it may be rude not to. It has, after all been under a month since he briefed them last in Madrid and then again virtually following a meeting in Brussels with EU Commission Vice President Maros Sefcovic, Foreign Secretary David Cameron and Chief Minister Fabian Picardo- that’s not to say there’s nothing new to report- there’s, for example, the small matter of the calling of a general election in the UK.
And, last Thursday Maros Sefcovic met with the Spanish Premier and with Mr Albares in Madrid. However, very little was said about Gibraltar other than they continued working towards a deal.
The meeting will take place in Algeciras at six in the afternoon and then the Foreign Minister will go onto the public rally in San Roque with the mayor Juan Carlos Ruiz Boix at eight.
The Spanish press has been keen to point out Mr Albares’ diary is empty for Wednesday but don’t say what they’re hoping it will be filled by.
