Some 93% of flu cases involved unvaccinated patients, as jab uptake declines

12th January 2024
Local vaccine uptake has declined this flu season, with 93% of laboratory-confirmed flu cases involving unvaccinated people, the Gibraltar Health Authority said.

The GHA said this indicates that the flu jab has provided good protection to those who have taken up the offer this season.

Between October to December last year, the GHA administered 4368 seasonal flu vaccines to adults.

This is around two thirds of the uptake compared to the previous flu season.

β€œAs is being experienced in many other countries, uptake is lower this year compared to last year,” a spokesperson said.

β€œIt is not too late to have a season flu vaccine.”

β€œThe surge in cases that we have seen are from flu A and we expect there to be a second wave of flu B in Feb/March time.”

β€œOf the lab confirmed flu cases so far, 93% have been in unvaccinated people indicating that we are seeing some good protection from the vaccine this year.”
