Peninsula to begin biofuel delivery

Locally based company Peninsula, the leading global independent marine fuel supplier, is commencing the supply of biofuels at its hub ports in the Strait of Gibraltar, having recently received its International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) in respect of physical supply operations in Gibraltar, Algeciras and nearby ports.

The ISCC permits the supply of biofuels from feedstocks that have fully traceable, sustainable and GHG reducing supply chains.

This enables Peninsula to directly support customers seeking drop-in biofuel solutions to help lower their carbon emissions, said a statement from the company.

“Peninsula’s future strategy is to offer bio products in all physical locations where sufficient customer demand exists,” said the statement.

“The group will continue to work closely with the ISCC, relying on its product framework, to ensure that suitable certifications and expertise are available to continue servicing Peninsula’s global customer base.”
“Peninsula is already at advanced stages of adding additional key biofuels supply locations to its roster.”

Peninsula said it recognises an increased complexity in the marine fuel mix and is tailoring its strategy to meet this multi-product journey.

It said that the utilisation of modern, efficient tonnage with a low carbon footprint is a key element to that effect. Continued investment in asset renewal is taking place with several newbuild tankers being welcomed to the fleet through 2023 and beyond. An example of this strategy is Peninsula’s new 12,500m3 Levante LNG bunker vessel, which will be arriving in the Strait of Gibraltar this summer, highlighting the company’s commitment to marine fuel decarbonisation.

Peninsula’s liquefied natural gas supply vessel, Levante LNG, refuelled the Royal Caribbean Group cruise vessel Silver Nova last Saturday, the company's first LNG supply in Gibraltar.

This was the second time the Silver Nova has received a delivery of LNG fuel at the Port of Gibraltar, in what is widely seen as a growth sector as the maritime industry moves to cleaner fuels.

Levante LNG, which has capacity for 12,500 cu m of LNG, is the latest addition to Peninsula’s fleet and arrived in Gibraltar last September, from where it is operating in the Strait of Gibraltar and western Mediterranean region.

“This is our first LNG supply in Gibraltar keeping us ahead of the decarbonisation curve and marking our move into the physical space through our joint owned, and operated vessel.”

Nacho de Miguel, Peninsula’s Head of Alternative Fuels & Sustainability, said the company’s LNG bunkering services in the West Mediterranean were now operational.

“Our latest asset is a state-of-the-art, dedicated LNG supply vessel that is providing lower carbon alternatives to the global LNG powered fleet,” Mr de Miguel said.
