New Inquiries Bill officially made Gibraltar law; Opposition Leader tells Governor act is 'assault on good governance'

The new Inquiries Act is now law.

The Chief Minister confirmed this afternoon that the Act has been given royal assent by the Governor – the final stage in making it Gibraltar law.

It's set to be brought into effect this week.

The legislation will then be applicable to the McGrail Inquiry into the former police commissioner's early retirement, set to start in two weeks.

It was passed in Parliament on Friday with a Government majority. The opposition has been highly critical of the legislation, with all eight members voting against it.

The Leader of the Opposition met with Sir David Steel to make him aware of his concerns regarding the legislation.

However, Sir David granted assent to the bill before the scheduled meeting with Keith Azopardi.
