Mayor of La Línea to Hold Further Meetings to Assess Progress on Potential Gibraltar Agreement

LA LÍNEA DE LA CONCEPCIÓN (CÁDIZ), 29 (EUROPA PRESS) – The mayor of La Línea de la Concepción (Cádiz), Juan Franco, has stated that he will hold additional meetings with representatives of the Cross-Border Group and other entities in the town bordering Gibraltar before the end of November to monitor the situation regarding a potential agreement on the Rock.

In a statement, the mayor reflected on the citizen march held on Friday, October 25, to demand exceptional measures for the town and to urge that the Gibraltar agreement post-Brexit be reached "as soon as possible."

He highlighted “the media impact and high level of participation” in last Friday's protest, where thousands took to the streets in a demonstration organized by the La Línea City Council.

Accompanied by the vice president of the Campo de Gibraltar Municipal Association, Manuel Abellán, the mayor met on Tuesday with members of the Cross-Border Group. Attendees included its president, Darren Cerisola, George Dyke representing the Gibraltar Chamber of Commerce, and Juan Carmona de Cózar, who was mayor when the border was first opened.

In what he described as a “very productive” meeting, the discussion also covered the potential consequences of a Brexit Agreement and the need for specific measures for the city, an issue highlighted in last Friday’s march, during which participants chanted slogans like “the people united will never be defeated” as they made their way toward the Gibraltar border, where the demonstration concluded.

The City Council previously called this march “historic,” aiming to demand “an immediate response to the serious issues affecting the city.” Due to the large number of participants, the planned route had to be adjusted to reach the final destination.
