07/08/2023 - The City Council of La Línea de la Concepción has been forced on Monday to paralyze the redevelopment works that are being developed on Avenida de España, at the height of Plaza de La Constitución, due to the appearance of alleged "archaeological remains".

The works will continue in another section of the avenue until the opinion of the Junta de Andalucía, as indicated by the Linense Consistory in a note.

The appearance of a stone wall during these redevelopment works has motivated the City Council to decree the stoppage in that section and this finding has been brought to the attention of the Ministry of Tourism and Culture of the Junta de Andalucía to start the process of investigation and identification of the remains found.

The delegate councilor of Works, Yolanda Fernández Borastero, has indicated that "everything indicates" that it is "a part of the contravalación line, although its origin cannot be specified exactly".

During the period of time that lasts the study of these remains by the technicians of the Junta de Andalucía, the works will remain stopped in that enclave. However, the City Council has indicated, these works will continue their normal development in the initial section of the avenue of Spain, "in order to meet the deadlines established by the project."

The appearance of a stone wall has forced the City Council to stop the urban intervention carried out in this important road

The City Council of La Línea de la Concepción has been forced to stop the redevelopment works carried out on Avenida de España, at the height of Plaza de La Constitución, due to the appearance of alleged "archaeological remains". These remains are located just 500 meters from the fence that separates La Línea with Gibraltar.

It is now up to the Board to begin the process of investigating and identifying the remains found. The delegate councilor of Works, Yolanda Fernández, has informed that it is "a part of the contravalación line -trench or defense line-, although its origin cannot be specified exactly".

They authorise the continuation of the works in La Línea, where possible archaeological remains were found.

The urban redevelopment works on Avenida de España, in the section with Plaza de la Constitución in La Línea de la Concepción (Cádiz), which were halted on August 7th due to the discovery of potential archaeological remains, have been resumed this Thursday following the authorisation issued by the Junta de Andalucía.

The appearance of a stone wall during these redevelopment works prompted the City Council to declare a halt in that section. This discovery was reported to the Department of Tourism and Culture of the Junta de Andalucía to initiate the process of investigation and identification of the found remains, as stated by the La Línea City Council in a statement.

After providing detailed information to the technicians of the Department, and once the found remains have been registered and georeferenced, they will be protected by the installation of a geotextile fabric and sand. This will allow the planned works to continue. According to the provisions of the National Plan for the Protection of Archaeological Heritage, under the Ministry of Culture, the supervision of earth-moving activities by an archaeologist is necessary to verify if new remains appear.

These professionals will need to complete a diary of archaeological activities, in which any new developments and findings will be recorded in case a situation of this nature reoccurs.

The City Council has indicated that the municipal Infrastructure and Works department notified that the works in their initial section would continue "from the very beginning" until notification was received from the Junta regarding the discovery of a stone wall in the Plaza de la Constitución section.
