Government announces those living on boats will be granted residency

Those living on boats will be able to vote at the next election, with the Government announcing today that it will be granting residency to those who meet the criteria.

It's lifting the instruction which it previously issued under the Register of Occupation Act which meant that residency was not granted to anyone who lived on a vessel.

At the time it expressed concerns that the system was being abused.

It will however, be setting up a review of current legislative regime on residency requirements, to include a review on the criteria for eligibility.
