EU to impose universal charger for all smartphones, other electronic devices

The European Commission said Thursday it wants a single type of charging port to be used for all smartphones and tablets as well as equipment such as cameras, some headphones, portable speakers and handheld video consoles.

The Commission also wants the sale of chargers to be decoupled from devices. The aim is to reduce waste by encouraging consumers to re-use existing chargers when buying a new electronic device.

The Commission has been working toward a common charger for more than a decade, with their research estimating that disposed of and unused charging cables generate more than 11,000 tonnes of e-waste per year. It expects the proposal to reduce that by almost 1,000 tonnes.
