The sheltered stability of the Rock has been shattered in recent years by a series of inconceivable global catastrophes that have sparked fear and uncertainty.
Political forces have turned their backs on Gibraltar, environmental awareness has revealed high levels of local contamination and a global pandemic continues to paralyze society.
These are trials and tribulations not faced since Franco shut the frontier in 1969, but are they also used to justify pushing through unpopular measures?
Deuteronomy
6:1 Now these [are] the Commandments , the Statutes , and the Judgments , which the “I AM” your God commanded to teach you, that ye might do [them] in the land where ye go to possess it:
6:2 That thou mightest fear the “I AM” thy God, to keep all His Statutes and His Commandments, which I command thee, thou, and thy son, and thy son’s son (in perpetuity), all the days of thy life; and that thy days may be prolonged.
6:3 Hear therefore, O Israel, and observe to do [it]; that it may be well with thee , and that ye may increase mightily, as the “I AM” God of thy fathers hath promised thee , in the land that floweth with milk and honey.
6:4 Hear, O Israel: The “I AM” our God [is] one “I AM”:
6:5 And thou shalt love the “I AM” thy God with ALL thine heart, and with ALL thy soul, and with ALL thy might and Him ONLY shalt thou serve .
6:6 And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart:
6:7 And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.
6:8 And thou shalt bind thine hand to them for a sign, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes [that ye look not away].

Deuteronomy 28:1 And it shall come to pass, if thou shalt hearken diligently unto the voice of the "I AM" thy God, to observe [and] to do all His Commandments which I command thee this day, that the "I AM" thy God will set thee on high above all nations of the earth:
28:2 And ALL THESE BLESSINGS shall come on thee, and overtake thee, if thou shalt hearken unto the voice of the "I AM" thy God.
The language of a ‘new normal’ being deployed by governments worldwide is almost used as a way to quell any uncertainty ushered in by the pandemic. Social and economic challenges affronting humanity are answered with this potentially dangerous slogan that, if (or rather, when) misused, could trap citizens in authoritarian regimes.
