Uruguayan soccer star Juan Izquierdo has tragically died after collapsing suddenly on the field mid-game.
Izquierdo had been hospitalized after suffering a cardiac arrest during a match in Brazil last Thursday.
The young athlete was just 27 years old when he died.
Izquierdo was playing in a Copa Libertadores game in Sao Paulo when he went into cardiac arrest.
The game came to an immediate halt when Izquierdo collapsed suddenly.
Fans looked on in horror as the soccer star received emergency medical treatment on the field.
His club Nacional announced his death in a post on X.
The post said the club and fans are “in grief for his irreplaceable loss.”
“It is with deepest pain and shock in our hearts that Club Nacional de Football announces the passing of our beloved player Juan Izquierdo,” the club posted.

Record-breaking California college track star Shelby Daniele has tragically died suddenly, according to her family.
The 23-year-old athlete died just months after graduating from California Polytechnic State University with a master’s degree.
Daniele’s devasted sister described her sudden and unexpected death as “my worst nightmare.”
The track and field star broke Cal Poly’s indoor 200m record last year with a time of 24.69 seconds.
Daniele competed for the Mustangs for five years between 2020 and 2024.
During her time at the university, the talented sprinter earned a bachelor’s degree in agriculture in 2023.
She then went on to secure a master’s in June.
Yet just over three months later, the university made the shock announcement that Daniele had tragically passed away.
“Cal Poly Athletics was deeply saddened to learn of the recent passing of former Cal Poly student-athlete Shelby Daniele,” the statement read.
