Trouble in Toyland: How the $16 BILLION âSmart Toysâ Industry Spies on Your Children and Makes Their Data Available to Child Traffickers

If your end-of-year holiday traditions include buying presents for your children and grandchildren, please avoid high-tech toys such as the growing âsmart toyâ sector with toys connected to the Internet. These âtoysâ are mainly data collection tools to collect as much information on your children as possible, including their location.
It is a dream scenario for child traffickers.
The publication âTrouble in Toylandâ by the U.S. PIRG Education Fund has just published their 2023 report with a significant section on âsmart toysâ.
Excerpts from their Executive Summary:
Last month, an 11-year-old girl was kidnapped by a man she encountered while playing a game online. Fortunately, she was found safe a short time later, about 135 miles away from her home. The game, Roblox, is one of the most popular mobile games this year.
This past spring, the Federal Trade Commission accused Amazon of violating the Childrenâs Online Privacy Protection Act Rule (COPPA) through its Alexa service by keeping the voice recordings of children indefinitely and failing to delete childrensâ transcripts, even when a parent requested they be deleted. Amazon also gathered geolocation data and used childrensâ transcripts for its own purposes.
A few years ago, Fisher Priceâs Smart Toy Bear was discontinued. It was created for children ages 3 through 8 as âan interactive learning friend that talks, listens, and âremembersâ what your child says and even responds when spoken to,â according to WeLiveSecurity. But research found a security flaw in the app would allow hackers to get information about children without permission.
This toy bear is not an isolated case. Multiple toys from major manufacturers have been discontinued in recent years after research from various groups showed that childrenâs voices, images, locations and other information was being improperly collected or hacked. In other cases, vulnerable toys are still for sale.
These days, weâre surrounded by smart devices â all of these things with microphones, cameras, connectivity, location trackers and more. These devices connect to the internet and/or to the outside world, and they gather and store data, sometimes very poorly. Our childrenâs holiday gift wish lists may be filled with stuffed animals that listen and talk, devices that learn their habits, games with online accounts, smart speakers and watches, or all kinds of toys that require you to download an app.
The global market for smart toys grew from $14.1 billion in 2022 to $16.7 billion this year, according to a large market research firm. The business of smart toys is expected to more than double by 2027.

The state of New Mexico has sued social media giant Meta and its CEO Mark Zuckerberg for âknowinglyâ exposing children to âsexual exploitation and mental health harm.â
In a Tuesday court filing, New Mexicoâs Attorney Generalâs (NMAG) Office revealed that it had conducted an undercover investigation, creating fake accounts of minors which were then used to fish for offending content, according to a press release reported by the Daily Caller.
âMeta and its CEO tell the public that Metaâs social media platforms are safe and good for kids,â reads the lawsuit. âThe reality is far different. Meta knowingly exposes children to the twin dangers of sexual exploitation and mental health harm. Metaâs conduct has turned New Mexico children who are on its platforms into victims. Metaâs motive for doing so is profit.â
Meta is accused of allowing Facebook and Instagram to become âa marketplace for predators in search of children upon whom to prey.

A new draft law in Kazakhstan would surgically remove the genitals of convicted pedophiles.
MPs reportedly have complained the system of chemical castration is not deterring child sex offenders.

âUnfortunately, [sex crimes against children] are happening more and more often,â he said, suggesting chemical castration â which lowers the male libido through injected anti-androgen drugs â was not effective.
âBy letting a rapist go free, we allow them to reoffend,â he added.

Erkezhan Nurmakhan, five, was lured to a paedophileâs house after he offered her money for an ice cream.
Killer Saidolim Gayibnazarov, 48, who had previous convictions, was sentenced to life in jail and chemical castration.

This statement comes after a six-second video was posted on his Instagram, with a message that read âTHE DEATH OF RYAN GARCIA,â accompanied by a slew of insults directed at the lightweight boxing sensation. This ominous post has since sparked widespread alarm among his followers and the boxing community.

On Garciaâs Instagram page â where his username is âkingryanâ â a post was shared that has ultimately left his fans concerned for the boxerâs wellbeing. The video lasts just six seconds and shows a shaky video of what appears to be the boxerâs house along with a strange message seemingly written by a stranger.
The post was shared to both his story and main page, along with Tiny Timâs âTip Toe Thruâ the Tulipsâ playing over the clip. The footage showed someone holding the phone as it films facing upward along with an overlaying message that read: âWe got him boys.
âRYAN GARCIA RIP B**** 666 Video is exactly 666 in time WE TOLD YOU WE WERE COMINGâ â along with what appears to be a laugh before it fades into incoherent gibberish.
On Garciaâs X page, the caption read: âMARCH 3 SUNDAY 2024 we slit RG THROAT AND THRU HIM IN A BASKET NOBODY WILL FIND HIM.â
The disturbing message is followed by a series of randomly pressed letters and closes with the sentence: âSATAN SITTING AT THE TOP NOW. 666.â
The same video featured a different caption on Instagram to his X account, with the photo appâs version reading: âTHE DEATH OF RYAN GARCIA BILL HANEY WAS RIGHT ON THAT ONE BAA A ABANANABA WHABABANANANABA A BAPHOMET BAPHOMET.â
After another series of randomly pressed keys, the text continues: âThis is why you donât mess with us at the top B*** ASS B**** SUNDAY MARCH 3 2024.â

Louisiana Governor Signs Bill Authorizing Surgical Castration For Child Sex Offenders

Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry has signed into law a bill that would allow state judges to sentence those convicted of sex crimes against victims under the age of 13 to undergo surgical castration.
Senate Bill 371, sponsored by state Sen. Regina Ashford Barrow, is expected to take effect on Aug. 1 following the Republican governorâs signature on June 18.
The law allows Louisiana judges to punish offenders aged 17 and older with surgical castration if they are convicted of aggravated sex crimes against a victim under the age of 13.
The Department of Public Safety and Corrections will oversee the procedure, but it will not be performed if ânot medically appropriate,â according to the bill.
Under the law, a court-appointed medical expert will need to determine whether the offender is âan appropriate candidateâ for surgical castration within 60 days from the imposition of sentence.
âIn all cases involving an offender sentenced to a period of incarceration or confinement in institution, the procedure shall be performed not later than one week prior to the offenderâs release from the institution,â the legislation reads.
If an offender âfails to appearâ as required by court order for surgical castration, the offender may be charged and sentenced to three to five years in prison without the âbenefit of probation, parole, or suspension of sentence,â according to the new law.
The bill garnered bipartisan support in the state legislature. During a committee hearing in April, Republican state Sen. Valarie Hodges described the measure as âa consequenceâ for offenders guilty of committing sex crimes against children.
âItâs a step over and beyond just going to jail and getting out,â Ms. Hodges said, according to The Associated Press.
The legislation, proposed by Ms. Barrow, expands on a previous act by authorizing a judge to order a physical castration to those convicted of a sex offense in which the victim was 13 or under.
âWe are talking about babies who are being violated by somebody,â the Democratic senator said at the committee meeting in April. âThat is inexcusable.â
According to state law, voluntary castration for people convicted of rape dates back to 2008, when the Legislature passed legislation that sentenced a sex offender âto be treated with medroxyprogesterone acetate, or MPA.â
âHowever, in lieu of treatment with medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA), the court may order the defendant to undergo physical castration provided the defendant file a written motion with the court stating that he intelligently and knowingly, gives his voluntary consent to physical castration as an alternative to the treatment,â the act states.

The United States Supreme Court has refused to hear reality star Josh Duggarâs appeal against his recent conviction for crimes against children.
On Monday, the SCOTUS declined to hear Duggarâs appeal of his child pornography conviction.
The court announced it was denying Duggarâs petition for certiorari in its Monday order list.
In December 2021, the former reality star was sentenced to 12 years in prison for the horrific crimes.
He had sought to overturn his prison sentence by appealing through the high court.
However, he is now expected to remain in prison until 2032.
A federal jury in Arkansas found 36-year-old Duggar guilty.
He was convicted on charges related to the receipt of child pornography and possession of child pornography.
In May 2022, he was sentenced to 151 months in prison.
