Any Gibraltar agreement will preserve 'operational autonomy' of British military facilities, says FCDO

The Foreign Office says any agreement over Gibraltar will "preserve the operational autonomy of the military facilities" here.

Parliamentary Under-Secretary at the Foreign Office, David Rutley, was responding to written questions from Tory MP, Greg Smith.

Mr Rutley said the Foreign Secretary and Secretary of State for Defence had discussed the issue and were unequivocal on this, adding Ministry of Defence officials are fully involved in the talks.

Mr Rutley also reiterated the UK Government is clear that the people of Gibraltar enjoy the right of self-determination.

He said the UK will never enter arrangements under which they would pass under the sovereignty of another state against their wishes.
