While you are correct to identify ego, pride, self worth etc as major problems, you seem to conveniently overlook that sexual immorality is the persistent theme that has plagued God's children from the fall in the garden all the way through to the present.
The really strange thing is that few can see it. The reason for this is that it is sin that blinds us. The devil has managed to blind the whole world largely with lust, as this seems to be the most effective tool he has. If you cant understand what im trying to say, then you are blind to the obvious. It is biblical history from the garden to the end times. Or, you could just look at the world around you. The bible describes it perfectly.

Please understand i mean no offense. I do not intend to be vulgar or lewd. Im going to reiterate, for the benefit of our understanding. Look past your sensibilities and try to see the absolute horror of the trap that has been laid for us.
So you get down on your knees and worship at the alter of flesh. And then you leave upon that alter your contribution, your sacrifice.
But it is the serpent that you are worshipping. And as if thats not horrible enough, you then are sacrificing your self, your spirit, your love, to some unholy creature that tells you it loves you even as it plans on feasting on your very soul.

It is a pitfall, a dark and terrible trap from which i could not escape on my own. The only way out is that God Himself reaches down from above and lifts us out. It is a bit like michelangelos painting on the Sistine chapel, except that by Christs sacrifice the veil is torn, and the hands clasp.
So now i see my enemy clearly. This is the battlespace, and the war is between the spirit and the flesh.
In seeing all this, and with God Himself standing with(in) us, the gates of hell will not prevail.
