The Israeli Assassination of Journalist Anas al-Sharif and Five Colleagues in Gaza City

“We understand these are our last days.”

GAZA CITY—The prominent Palestinian journalist Anas al-Sharif was buried in Gaza City on Monday, a broken slab of rock used as a headstone, one day after his assassination by the Israeli military. Five other journalists —four from Al Jazeera, Mohammed Qraiqeh, Ibrahim Zaher, Moamen Aliwa, and Mohammed Noufal, and one from media outlet Sahat, Mohammed Al-Khalidi—were killed alongside him and also laid to rest.

All six were killed on Sunday night in an Israeli airstrike on their media tent outside Al-Shifa hospital in what the Israeli military proudly proclaimed was an assassination targeting al-Sharif. Israel has now killed 238 journalists in Gaza, according to the Government Media Office.

Five Al Jazeera journalists killed in Gaza by Israel’s ‘psychopathic liar’

Israel has murdered five Al Jazeera journalists in Gaza, including correspondent Anas al-Sharif. They were targeted by a drone strike on their press tent outside al-Shifa Hospital. Al Jazeera Media Network has called on the international community to halt Israel's targeting of journalists. Earlier on Sunday Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pledged to allow journalists into the Gaza Strip to cover events there but stressed that ensuring the safety of media personnel was a key priority. This was just hours before his army murdered five Al Jazeera journalists.

Israel assassinates Gaza’s entire Al Jazeera media team, including well known and highly respected reporter Anas Al-Shariff

Dead Men Tell No Tales: How Israel Eliminates Witnesses

The murder of Anas al-Sharif marks a devastating blow to truth in an already obscured conflict. This 28-year-old Palestinian journalist, born in Jabalia refugee camp, had become the foremost voice reporting from Gaza's frontlines since October 2023. Despite the December killing of his father when Israeli forces struck their family home, despite explicit death threats, al-Sharif continued broadcasting the reality of Gaza to the world – until Israel silenced him permanently.
His assassination fits a pattern many observers have long identified. Author Max Blumenthal's 2013 book "Goliath" described a society fundamentally shaped by extremism and Jewish supremacism – an analysis that seems prescient today. As one commentator explains, "When you build an ethno-state on stolen land, colonize the West Bank, pin Palestinians inside Gaza...you develop a level of fanaticism, extremism that is just off the charts." The genocide unfolding now appears as the culmination of decades of dehumanization.
What allows this violence to continue? A propaganda machine that overwhelms Western audiences with demonstrable falsehoods. From fabricated claims about Hamas headquarters in hospitals to invented atrocities, Israel has deployed a barrage of lies to maintain support. More disturbing is the apparent normalization of these atrocities within Israeli society, where polls show continued support for military operations despite catastrophic civilian casualties. While some international allies have begun expressing reservations, unwavering US backing provides both material resources and diplomatic cover that enables the campaign to continue.
