Thousand of migrants flood Spain from Morocco, causing ‘absolute chaos’
Thousands of migrants ” totally collapsed” border fences and flooded into the tiny Spanish territory of Ceuta from Morocco Thursday — spurring local officials to urge Spain’s government to declare a national emergency.
Spain announced it would deploy military units to reinforce police in Ceuta after hordes of people, mainly Moroccans, busted into the North African enclave.
“The situation is absolute chaos,” said Rachid Sbihi, head of the association that represents Spain’s Civil Guard officers in Ceuta, who police the border.

Fabian Picardo: Ceuta is not a route into Gibraltar, Schengen or the EU
Chief Minister Fabian Picardo has sought to reassure the public that the recent mass crossing into Ceuta poses no threat to Gibraltar, stressing that the Spanish enclave is outside the Schengen Area and cannot be used as a gateway into mainland Spain or the wider European Union.
Speaking to Times Radio, Mr Picardo said much of the debate surrounding the incident had been based on a misunderstanding of how the border operates.
He pointed out that migrants who reach Ceuta remain subject to passport and identity checks before they can travel onwards.
"When people make their way into Ceuta, they are as far away from Gibraltar and the European Union as they were when they were in Tangier," he said.
He added that Gibraltar would not alter its own arrangements with the European Union in response to the events.
"There is no danger. Gibraltar is not going to suspend our new
arrangements with the European Union."
Police arrest Africans on suspicion of being illegal immigrants
Three men have been charged with immigration and theft-related offences after being arrested in Europort.
The Royal Gibraltar Police say off-duty RGP and Customs officers spotted the men carrying bolt-cutters and allegedly targeting bicycles on Thursday evening. Uniformed officers were called and made the arrests.
Police enquiries later found that none of the three men held the documentation required to enter or remain in Gibraltar.
Twenty-three-year-old Algerian national Louai Bahkoul, 31-year-old Moroccan national Oussama El Bradi, and 30-year-old Aymen Fatmi have each been charged with being a non-Gibraltarian in Gibraltar without a valid permit or certificate, and with going equipped for theft.
The three men have remained in police custody and are due to appear before the Magistrates' Court on Monday.
